VIII.  Astavakra on Bondage and Freedom

  1. Astavakra said: Bondage is there when the mind desires or grieves over anything, rejects or accepts anything, feels delight or anger with anything.
  2. There is freedom when the mind does not desire nor grieve, when it neither accepts nor rejects anything, neither feels happy nor is angry with anything.
  3. There is bondage when the mind is attached to any of the (sensory) perceptions. There is freedom when the mind is unattached to any perception.
  4. When there is no ego there is freedom; when there is ego there is bondage. Reflecting on this, refrain from acceptance or rejection of anything with ease.
