IX.  Astavakra on Indifference

  1. Astavakra said: To whom belong the conflicts relating to what should and should not be done? When do these cease and for whom either? Knowing this, practice renunciation and passionlessness through the cultivation of indifference.
  2. My son, rare is the blessed person whose passion for living, enjoyment and learning is extinguished through observing the vicissitudes of worldly men.
  3. A man of wisdom becomes serene through the realization that all this world is ephemeral, tainted by the threefold misery, worthless, contemptible and worthy of rejection.
  4. Realizing that the duality of opposites does not exist for man, where is time and where is age for him?
  5. Observing the diversity of opinion among the great seers, sages and yogis, what person is there who does not accept indifference and attain tranquility.
  6. He who gains complete knowledge of the true nature of pure consciousness through indifference to the world, equal-mindedness and (ontological) reason, saves himself from the succession of births. He has no other spiritual except himself.
  7. Discern the changes of the elements as nothing in reality but the primary elements, and yourself at once as free from their bondage. Thus will you abide in your essential nature.
  8. The desire surely is the world. Renounce all desires. The renunciation of the world comes from the renunciation of desire. Now you can remain wherever you are (destined).
